Problem with internet connection with LAN cable

I have just built my first windows-operating PC, and I have no idea how to connect to the internet. I want to connect to the internet with a LAN cable, but apparently it either doesn't work or requires me to do something to it for it to work.

Some further questions then:
- Have you connected any other devices by LAN to the router before (and worked)?
- Go into your network connections settings (right click on internet icon and go properties) and then adapter settings. What does it say under the adapter? Connected, no internet etc.
