My first CPU overclocking experience!

Hello all!

I just OC'ed my i7-6700k for the very first time! I overclocked it to 4.4Ghz and I left the voltage at auto. My CPU cooler is the NZXT Kraken x41!

Prime95 has been running for about 30min now, My max temp on the package is at 71°C and on one of the cores as well, It's stable at about 60-65° tho. Voltage didn't go above 1.260V!

So how did I do? Are these good results? :)

To OC simply, leave all voltages on auto and start raising the multiplier.
Check to see what vcore you get.
Up to 1.4 is ok.

Then, the nomenclature on motherboards will differ.
But you want to implement speed step or C1e.
This may require adaptive voltage or something similar sounding.
What you want to do is let the cpu lower the multiplier and voltage at idle or when there is little to do.

Looks good, the only thing left to do( what i´d recommend) is to lower the voltage one by one to achieve the lowest voltage at which the cpu is still stable to achieve better temps and to increase the lifespan of your processor
 
First of all, prime95 is a nasty test that does not use usual instructions.
One option might be OCCT. It will shut down the test at 85c.
In actual use you will see less. 70c is ok.
Make certain that your AIO cooler gets the needed fresh air to do it's job.

Your results look good, and I like the simplicity of voltage on AUTO.
How well you can do is largely determined by your luck in getting a good chip.

As of 5/2016
What percent can get an overclock at a somewhat sane 1.40v Vcore.


I7-6700K
4.9 2%
4.8 17%
4.7 59%
4.6 93%
4.5 100%

It is Vcore that will limit how high you can go, not thermal limits.

You can very well leave things as they are, the 6700K is outstanding even at stock.
But, you can go higher if you want.
Just monitor vcore(cpu-Z) will show you.
A upper limit is around 1.4v.

Then, you should implement speed step and adaptive voltage.
That will reduce the multiplier and vcore when the cpu has little to do.

So since my Bios was saying the Vcore was at 1.328 (CPU ID said 1.260, just noticed it was the VID I was looking at and not the VCore) I lowered it to 1.3 and ran an OCCT for 15min. The max temp on the cores was 67°C. I'm either considering OC'ing the CPU to 4.5Ghz and leaving the voltage where it's at now or I could try and lower the voltage with my 4.4ghz oc. What do you think is best?

So after overclocking it to 4,5Ghz @ 1,3V it crashed so I upped the voltage to 1,32V straight away. I ran an OCCT stress test for about 10minutes. Max temp on the cores varies from 57 to 70°. I also noticed that the clock speed went down to 4.0ghz, on idle it stays on 4.5ghz. Is that normal?

Should I do anything else?

I would stress test it a bit longer and if it continues to pass, I'd call it day! 4.5 @ <1.35 is a nice 24/7 OC for that chip.

Ran the stresstest for 30 min now and all is good, I was still using google chrome in the meanwhile :p
I think I will call it day indeed, I think the OC is perfect for my streaming needs while still maintaining decent temps and a decent voltage!
