Limits on new Graphics Cards in an older System

Hi,

My system specs are:

Intel Q9450 (quad core @ 2.66GHz)
Asus Maximus Formula x38 1333FSB Socket 775 DDR2
Corsair TX 750W
Corsair 4GB 1066MHz (soon to be replaced with 8GB Kingston 1066MHz)

I built this system in mid-2008 and when the graphics card gave up I replaced it in mid-2011 with a GeForce GTX 560Ti 1GB.

I tend to play older games - purely because it takes me so long to work my way through my backlog. Some of the games on my "to-play" list include:
Skyrim, GTAV, XCOM:EU, Dragon Age Inquisition, Bioshock Infinite, Dishonored, Wolfenstein New Order, Far Cry 4 & Shadow of Mordor.

To date, I've been able to play through games at an acceptable framerate at mid-settings, but I know the more I work my way through my backlog, the more I'll need a better graphics card.

However, I wanted to know if, given the age of my system in other areas, am I naturally limited to what graphics cards I can buy? For example, will other areas of the system bottleneck the latest cards so mean it's worth me buying an older one (but still better then my current one)?

I'd probably spend something in the region of up to £200 in order to extend the lifespan of my PC for a couple of years more and give it one last boost before I'd eventually replace it.

I tend to be loyal to nVidia (for better or worse). I've been eyeing the new 1060 but obviously there's no point in getting that if my PC will effectively bottleneck it down to a 960 or something.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I think you should look into a new cpu first as the 560 ti isn't that bad comparatively and you'll probably just bottleneck a top of the line gpu anyways. In my opinion, the best value gaming cpu is the Intel Pentium G3460 because for 60-70$ you get single thread performance about equal to a skylake i5-6600 or i7-6700. It's so cheap because it only has 2 cores, which really makes very little difference if you're gaming and is only important if you are going to record, stream, video edit, etc. Then build off that with a compatible motherboard and if you can use any extra money down the line to upgrade your gpu. The 1060 is definently a good choice as far as gpus go. However I recommend not getting the 3gb version because its missing some...

However I recommend not getting the 3gb version because its missing some performance from the 6gb 1060, which makes it basically a more expensive 900 series card. In fact your better off with a 900 series or some amd card like the rx 470 or rx 480 than the 3gb 1060.

Honestly if you was to even get a GTX 970 or 960 there may be some significant bottle necking as (no offense) when do you ever see this CPU used for games and if you was to ask me, I would say try and get a cheap but newer CPU, because you could get an Intel Core I3 for around £100 or an Intel Core I5 for £200.

so its up to you but you should defiantly upgrade the CPU as you will most likely encounter bottle necking. So if you get a £250 GPU and £100 CPU it will be around £400-500 but you can gradually upgrade.

Also note you can't switch between AMD and Intel so i'm guessing yours is an Intel so stick with Intel CPUS.

Now finally if you want to play games like Gta 5 you will need a high end GPU like a Gtx 970 or higher and a CPU like Intel Core I5 or higher for 1080p gaming.

I hope this helps
