Hello, I've tried reading my motherboard's manual (MSI P6N SLI Platinum MS-7350) and tried googling for my answer with no luck. I just replaced my old geforce 9800 graphics card with a geforce 750ti because I thought my old graphics card was bad. My screen keeps randomly going black with a "no dvi signal" message. I've done a fresh install of windows 10, I reinstalled drivers, I swapped monitors, and now I've changed graphics cards. I'm beginning to think that my pci e slot is bad. So I installed the card in the 2nd slot but it won't send any signal to the monitor. I tried to find the options to change the 2nd slot to primary in bios but can't. The manual doesn't mention anything about it. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks in advance for any answers.

Solution
No, there is no need to change anything in the BIOS for a single GPU to work on the second PCIe slot. If it does not work, and you get all good with the on board video, most likely there is something wrong with your video card.

Well, if you don't mind reading the user manual of your motherboard you would see that, as with all motherboards available in the market, there is only one PCIe x16 slot on it. The other is x8 and will be like that even with one card installed. If you tried the second PCIe with your 750 to no avail it could be either the GPU is defective or it could indicate something is wrong with your motherboard. Or even your PSU, as you have not mentioned your full specs, and a GTX 750 requires at least a 500W PSU, preferably a 80+ certified one, to work properly.

Yes, in that manual It states that there are 2 pcie x16, but the second will operate in x8 mode only. I'm fine with that. I'm trying to see if its the slot that's bad, not my graphics cards. So no one knows how to get it to work in the second slot? I don't want to start buying replacememt parts if its not going to fix it. Id like to narrow it down first.

I installed it into the second slot, but when the pc boots up, the screen gets absolutely no signal. I thought it might be a setting in bios to change the second slot to primary, but I can't find it.

OK, so when I put the graphics card in the second slot, leaving the first slot empty, I get no video signal to the monitor at all. The monitor just stays off. No onboard graphics kicking in.

Hi,

I also think it may be a connection problem. Even with no discrete graphics card, the monitor should be receiving a signal from one of your video out ports from the motherboard, because there is onboard graphics chip. But you would have to plug the monitor to the video out on the motherboard, NOT to your graphics card.

If that works, then plug the monitor to your video card, and if still no signal, then you probably have a defective PCIE slot, or the graphics card's video out ports are defective, or the graphics card itself is defective.

Hope this helps,

Jeff

Thanks for the help so far guys! So, yes I tried a different monitor, same problem. Just to be clear, when the graphics card is in the primary slot, it works ok for a while. But then my pc either freezes, or the signal to the monitor stops, but I can still hear the audio. The audio stays for a minute, but sometimes that will stop too. This always happens in games, but that's pretty much all I do on my PC. I did furmark and it passes that. SO, when I put the graphics card in the second slot, it sends nothing to the monitor, nothing. From what I understand, it shouldn't do that? Id also like to note that the 750ti draws all its power from the slot. No direct power from the psu. The past couple days I have down clocked my GPU to 93% and I stopped experiencing the blank screen in the middle of gameplay, but I still get the computer freezes.

Well, I have an update. I guess I had to turn the sli switch card to sli mode. I could have sworn that would ruin things but I got it working in the 2nd pcie slot (1st slot empty) and it seems to be running smoothly. Thanks everyone for the help!
