External hard drive won't mount - have run Crystal Disk

Hi guys,
have been trying to fix this problem for over a year so I hope you can help.
Western Digital 'My Book' 2TB suddenly stopped working - i suspect corrupted files or something.
I just NEED the files off there now, I don't care about saving the HD itself.
I tried opening it in disk utility. It appears in the left column, but cannot be mounted or repaired.

Mac OSX, v10.9.3
3.06GHz Intel Core i3
12GB 1067 MHz DDR3

I also tried in Windows (Vista)
Crystal Disk Info shows it's health as a 'CAUTION' status.
Yet still won't appear in "my computer".

I understand it's frustrating when not all the right information is provided in a question - but I'm honestly not sure what is relevant!

Welcome to the TH Community, @Chris!

I'm sorry to hear about your issues with the WD My Book external drive! I'd strongly recommend you backup all the data from the drive as soon as you can access it! Since it does mount on the Windows Vista computer, check how it appears in the Disk management there. Taking a screenshot could be really helpful, too.
Instead of using third-party tools, you should also try running the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics Utility. According to the SMART results, it seems like you have one bad sector and some pending sectors that might be read correctly, but they could also become bad sectors. This is why it's highly recommended you backup your files from the WD My Book once you are able to access them.

Let me know how the drive appers in Windows' Disk Management!

Okay so I should clarify - it doesn't 'mount' on the windows computer in the sense that it doesn't appear in 'My Computer'.
It does appear in Disk Management however - which i'll provide a screenshot below.
In the same way, it does not appear on the Mac desktop, but does show up in 'Disk Utility;.
The files remain inaccessible on either platform - just wanted to clarify as I'm sure I'm probably using the wrong terminology.

Great so before I try that WD software, I'll just get you to have a look at this screenshot.
So it's showing up as 'Disk 1 - Unknown, not initialised'.
Now I'm quite hesitant to click 'initialise', as I feel like it will wipe all the data - and thats the only thing I need haha.

Hello again, Chris!

This is pretty unfortunate as you might need the assistance of a professional data recovery company, if the WD My Book contents are not accessible from either one of your computers.

I'd not re-initialize the drive either, as it would most probably destroy your data. You can also give some third-party data recovery tools a try, but keep in mind that it would be at your own risk.
Just to be absolutely sure, I'd still advise you to find another Windows computer and check how the WD My Book appears there as well.
Keep in mind that diagnostics still put additional stress on the drive, but using the Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows will help us determine the SMART and health status of the HDD. My WD Elements drive won't appear in the finder but will in the disk utility, just like the original post. Its been two years or more has the answer changed? I have a iMac running Mojave.
Tried re-mounting it, but get a failed response. the Utility says the disk is 2T and it's full (0 bytes available). Does this mean the hardware has failed? the disk still spins and the the light flashes.
is this typical of a hard drive failure? should I accept my losses and just get an SSD, would they be any better?
