Is it really better to lower graphical detail in exchange for resolution? Isn't that just making a worse picture more clear? Or is the drop in graphical detail from ultra to high not a big deal thus resolution boost is superior?

I say 1440p ultra is the best deal right now, lowering the setting may not have a lot of difference, but can make thing look bland, 2d, and not really like something you would see in real life, and 4K is hard to drive, and the pixel density of a 24" 1440p monitor and a 4K monitor of the same size is not a lot of difference, for all the money you are spending

It depends, some settings like AA is useless at 4K or more, the best way in my opinion is to push the resolution to the max and then adjust the details to obtain a good FPS output, but it really depends by game, some that use high blur techniques have less impact from 1440p to 4K and the result is better with higher details over resolution, games like World of Warcraft is much bett at higher resolutions over some settings that you barely notice.

A 4k display has a denser image.
Because of that, one does not need high aa settings to still get straight lines.
aa is one of the more costly settings to graphics performance.

If one needs lower settings to get adequate fps performance, lowering aa is the first thing to do since you lose little at 4k.
