I think it only supports 144Hz when using DVI-D and DisplayPort. Off AOC's website:

"Maximum Resolution 1920x1080@144Hz: DisplayPort / DVI Dual Link"

Doesn't list VGA (or HDMI) as supporting 144Hz.

Just the monitor is connected with VGA because my video card is connected with a DVI - VGA adaptor so it must be connected at both ends with DVI ?

Yes, must be connected using DUAL LINK DVI cable, or Displayport cable. No adapters needed, and VGA will not work for 144hz
