I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card.

I have a GTX 960, I got it two years ago. However untill recently I was happy with it. Then I upgraded my PC and now I feel like it can't keep up with the rest of the computer. Now I'm looking to buy a 1080p monitor @ 144hz. After doing some reading I know that the GTX 960 is insufficient at getting the most out of a 1080p monitor @ 144hz. So my question is what card should I get? I use my computer for school but I also play video games on it a lot. I also don't have stacks of cash lying around. Preferably I would like to keep price under $600 maybe $700. In terms of games I play on my PC, I'm not really into AAA games. I do play a couple games that demand a lot; like GTA V, MGSVTPP, and Overwatch. I'm not looking for a card that can put out max settings at 1080p and 144hz. I'm fine with high settings, I just want a card that makes a 1080p 144hz monitor worth it.
Specs:
Motherboard:
Gigabyte Z97X - Gaming 7
Processor:
Intel Quad Core i5 4690K @ 3.5 Ghz
Ram:
DDR3 32Gb @ 1866Mhz
Case (to check compatibility):
Thermaltake Versa N21

Any responces would be greatly appreciated.

Your best bet is a GTX 1060,70,80 all of which should be adequate. However the AMD RX480 8GB comes in at a very good price and is able to hold its corner in terms of performance against most High end cards. Also the 8GB of VRAM also means you will have more than currently needed for most games and will give somewhat of a Future proof in your system :).

I will definitely consider it as an option because:
1. It's price, it's literally 1/3 the price of a GTX 10x0
2. It has 8Gb of VRam
3. The monitor I am looking at has AMD Freesync built in.

However I do have a couple quetions:
1. While the price really appeals to me, does it really hold it's ground against other high end cards?
2. Being way cheaper than other high end cards is there anything that it doesn't have that a higher end card, because there is such a large price gap? (The only reason I'm asking this is because if it really can hold it's ground against high end cards and have the same features it's basically a no brainer.)
3. Will there be any compatibily issues because I have an intel processor?

I'd get either the RX 480 ir GTX 1060

1. Depends. Against the 1070/1080 it does well in 1080p. The higher end cards will always do better, that's why they're priced higher.
2. Because it goes like this GTX 1060/RX 480 is the sweet spot for 1080p, GTX 1070 is the sweet spot for 1440p, and the 1080 is for maxed 1440p and entering 4K.
3. Nope.

This sums it up :), Aulthough it is worth mentioning that you can probably play 1440p with the RX480, "The RX-480 can even manage gaming comfortably at 1440P (2560x1440)"This is the Nitro+ Edition of the card which cost slighlty more than others.
