Hi everyone,

I just wanted to find out if it is possible to decrease the wattage of the CoolerMaster Silent Pro M2 1500W Power Supply. The reason being, my machine no longer requires so much power. If it is possible, how would I be able to do it. Motherboard potentially?

Thanks for the help.

If you are going form say 2 980 ti cards to one 1080 then the difference would be less then $1 per year.

If you are no longer gaming with this rig and no longer have GPUs in it so thus it is sucking up < 100w at peak load then you will be so far outside of your efficiency range that you would actually use 30-60w more power. This...
Watts = Volts * Amps
Amps is completely as required, thus if your computer draw only needs 12 amps then your PSU is only going to output 12A, regardless if it has the ability to output 120.

Now with that said, a PSU runs most efficiently at 25-50% load, so if you are running an 80w PC on a 1500w PSU you are wasting electricity due to the inefficiency.

Best thing you could do is pickup a decent PSU with less wattage.

Hi guys thanks for the quick responses. My main concern is electricity usage. Would my electricity usage be the same if i had a 1500w psu or a 800w psu, as there will only draw the power that is needed for the machine?

Many thanks

A 800w unit would be slightly more efficient but you are talking literally pennies/cents per year here.
