Hello guys I have a gigabyte gaming 3 mother board and I just bought a new graphic card gtx 1060 MSI. Whenever I connect the card I get an error of please power down and connect PCI . I use to use a 980 before with a i7 4490k can anybody help me with this issue . PSU is also 800 w so I dunno. What's going wrong

Solution
Well the only thing left to rule out its not either card, take your msi gtx1060 to a computer shop.
Tell them the graphics card is not being detected in your asus motherboard.
Have them run a test and make sure the card does indeed work, from post boot all the way up to the windows start up screen.
If they say it works on either card, your motherboard might be at fault.
Speak with gigabyte tier 3 technicians and explain the issue, they might be able to fix it or give you a upgrade option.

It is currently I'm pcix16 slot with a 6 pin connector from the power supply. The 980 use to use 6+2 pin .i disabled the obbaord graphics and it will ask me which pcie slot to make active which one should i choose ?

Why did you downgrade video card? Was the 980 broken?

Anyway, it sounds like you need to reset your CMOS prior to the installing your GPU. Consult your motherboard manual for the proper procedure. Don't use a random one online for it.

If that doesn't work out, re-do the installation making sure all connections are firmly in place. Use only one stick of RAM until it boots, then add the rest.

If that doesn't work, test the GPU in a friends setup. If that's not possible get a refund.

Well I din wana Downgrade as such but since everybody said that 1060 is faster than 980 and consumes half the power I went with it as the 980 I got was a used one . and just then nvidia launched it. So I just thought getting the 1060 would be a better option . GPU is not that problem as the person gave me MSI and gainward GPu . both of them showed the same error .so I assume something to do with the power supply or motherboard . I hope I am right ?

It's faster in a couple games. Overall the GTX 980 is a stronger card. 1060 is still very strong and you are correct, much more efficient I was just curious in case the 980 had affected your setup.

If you know the GPU works, then yes, your motherboard and PSU could be the issue. The problem is you said it worked prior to this right? That means during the removal of the old card something went wrong.

I would try to reset your CMOS before going any further. Remove the power, LAN, and motherboard cables. Remove battery for 10 minutes. Replace battery and remove all sticks of RAM but one. Try to boot.

Currently I have put in a gtx960 as a temporary card and its up and running I'm only facing the issue with the 1060. Do I still follow the same procedure ??

Oh well that rules out motherboard and PSU then hahaha...

Yes. It is possible, but unlikely that the motherboard does not recognize the GPU. Follow the procedure and let me know the results

Both the connectors are are 6+2 pin. Do you think I would have to use just a 6pin ? Since the gtx 960 needs 6+2 . I don't really understand what's causing this issue . do you have any other guesses ?

Like I said try to reset the CMOS (BIOS) and use only one stick of RAM to boot.

I'm not sure what you mean, just connect the power connections the GPU needs. Nothing less or more.

OK I'll try that . what I meant was the power connectors which we use to connect the card from the PSU . is a 6+2 pin . on the 1060 it states that it needs a 6 pin connector . I hope its not the 6+2 pin causing the issue

No I have 6+2. To 1060 only.needs a 6 pin. So I hope there is no difference in the cables of 6+2 and just a 6pin connector

I did that .I just keep getting the error of power down and connect pcie to graphics card with the 1060 . the temporary 960 runs well in the same slot . not able to figure out what's the issue
