Hi everyone !
I've had a Dlink 2640b modem/router for almost 8 years now, i decided to purchase a new router, after a lot of digging i settled for the Tplink archer c7, now that i have it i find out that its a router only, and that i need to buy a separate modem (for the isp dsl rj11 cable)!

... My question is: Can i configure my old Dlink router to act as a modem only (while the tplink as the main router)... If not then would any type of modem do it ?
... If there's any other alternative to buying a seperate modem please let me know. Thank you.

Solution
You should be able to use an ethernet cable, and just plug the new router's WAN port into the old modem's WAN port. So wall and phone jack should be plugged into modem, and the router should be plugged into the outlet, and the modem via wan port (use ethernet/cat5e cable)

What??

Unfortunately your Dlink 2640b modem/router cannot be put into bridge mode (which is what you really need). It would probably be best to have a modem only. That being said you can make it work okay with your current equipment by disabling the wireless on the Dlink and connecting the WAN port of the Archer to a LAN port on the Dlink. After that you need to go into the DLINK and put the Archer into the Dlink DMZ configuration. By doing this you are essentially just using your Dlink as a modem. If you don't put your Archer in the DMZ then you will have a double NAT situation that can cause problems.

OK but then unless he can turn off the routing in the old modem/router he is going to double NAT his connection on the new router. Like he asked can he turn it into just a modem? NOT a router with another router attached to it.

^Do what he says, then

Transfer WIFI from old box to new box. This is easy enough, just disable WIFI from old box, enable on new, BAM!

NAT (Network Address Translation). Everytime you go through a box like that, it wants to do NAT. Ideally, you want only ONE box to do the NATing. Double-NATing works but it introduces complications. The easiest way to do this is to turn the new router into an Access Point. HERE is how to do it.

I am assuming you got the new box because of WIFI and not due to some other issues.

The archer c7 has a better procesr and capabilities then the dlink box does.

It would be worth it in the long run to buy or rent a different DSL modem.
This way you can allow the C7 to do all the routing functions, and not have to have your dlink being a bottleneck by performing any of the routing processing.
