So I just built my first PC and it seems that the i5 6600k should idle at around 20-27 *C. However mine runs at 31 *C in the bios. Is this fine? My cpu cooler is the be quiet dark rock 3. Also I'd like to know if being in the bios counts as idle.

Solution
31c in the BIOS is totally fine, the BIOS will usually give higher temps than when you are idle in windows as it runs the CPU at it's full speed, whereas windows (depending on your settings) will downclock it when it's not doing much. Check your load temps and if they're good, then it's fine, you want to avoid being above 75-80c under full load.

Like Sergeant_Sneaky said, the bios shows the cpu at full power, none of the power saving features like speed step are working yet. Speed step is built into intel cpu's and allows them to drop the multiplier so a 3.9ghz cpu can run at just 800mhz when it's doing nothing. Higher than normal idle temps can sometimes be an indication of a problem if the cpu is idling at 50-60c and actually idling (0-1% cpu usage in task manager, not 30-40% usage on background tasks).

Load temps are more important though, you might have a cpu that runs at acceptable temps while there's no work being done then have it overheat when it's under load. There's no idle that it 'should' run at and will also depend on your ambient room temps. A cpu idling at 27c when the room is 20c will idle at a higher temp when the room is 26c. Try running prime95 version 26.6 with small fft's for a worst case scenario of temps and whether or not your cooling is keeping your cpu cool enough.

Thanks so much both of you, that was really reassuring. I'm sorry but I can't put both of you as the solution:(. I'll try and get back to you with my Prime95 temps as soon as I've acquired a Windows license!

I'm glad we could help, I believe version 26.6 is still the one to use with Skylake :)
