Questions in the thread name will my macbook air 13 inch continue to backup if i close the lid or will it stop im backing up to my windows shared network folder

Im very new to mac os x ive mostly used windows tooks me ages to just set up my mac to time machine backup to a network shared thats not a apple time capsule

Apologies. The first time I read this I interpreted your question as how would Windows act on a Mac in this situation, not as OsX.

In OSx, it will always go to sleep when the lid closes, but there are apps that you can install that prevent sleep on lid closing.
