WD Blue 1TB issues

Hello,
I have a weird issue, my WD HDD is not working properly. For example, sometimes it's not reconized after I do a restart, but after a shutdown it is working again. This started happening a couple of weeks ago. The other day I was playing Doom, and every 10-15minutes the game would hang for 15-20seconds and then it would resume, and after maybe a 3-4hangs the game would crash completely, and after that most of my files one the drive are inaccesible. Then I have to do a shutdown and everything goes back to normal. Or today, I was putting the drive under load by copying some big files to it, and after a couple of minutes the process aborted, because windows no longer could see my files. Could this be a Psu issue, or is my HDD dying? I tried using different sata cables, even a molex to sata cable, and it seemed to work, but only for a couple of days. But it seems like that this also affects my Windows drive(ssd), while I was playing Just Cause 3, I also experienced a couple of hangs. But there is also a weird coincidence, because this started happening shortly after I installed the Windows 10 anniversary udapte. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Edit: I don't think that it's a Windows 10 bug, because after my hard drive dissapears, the drive is also missing from my BIOS after I do a restart.

Solution

I would be a little surprised if there was an OS-specific bug regarding the HDD. The more likely explanation is that something went wrong during the OS update process and if you did a clean re-install of Windows 10.1, the problem would mysteriously not reappear.

All non-trivial OS are full of bugs, especially when you overwrite or upgrade existing installs.

Sounds like a flaky HDD controller. Get your data out of there ASAP and once you are done doing that, run the manufacturer's diagnostic tools to see if they can find anything wrong with the HDD. If they do, the software will give you an error code that you can use to get the RMA process started.

Hey InvalidError, thanks for aswering. You mean the Hdd controller on the motherboard, or on the HDD itself? I'm asking Since I had these hangs on my Ssd as well when I played JC3. I tested my WD drive with the manufacturers tool,no errors at all.

You can try a different port on the motherboard, just in case.

It could also be that the HDD or motherboard has a compatibility issue. I have at least one HDD which refuses to work with my Core2Duo's motherboard but works perfectly fine anywhere else and the C2D also worked fine with all other HDDs that have gone in it.

And when I wrote that it might be a bad controller, I meant on the HDD. If you want to minimize the risk to your data when you have unresolved issues, plan for the worst.

Hey there, @Ante93!

I'd second what @InvalidError mentioned and advise you to backup all the important data from the WD Blue 1 TB somewhere else before proceeding with the troubleshooting. Checking how the HDD would behave in another system is a pretty good way to determine what might be the source of the issue.
Since this happened only after the Windows 10 update on your system, you could also make sure you install the latest SATA controller & Chipset drivers from your motherboard manufacturer's official website.

Keep us posted with the troubleshooting & good luck!

I've tried using different ports on the motherboard, it really made no difference, the hard disk was working perfectly for 2 years(both on Win8.1 and Win10), but it seems like that my third drive (Hitachi 500GB) where I keep most of my personal files, is working perfectly.
Hey @SuperSoph_WD, thanks for the reply. Yeah, I already backed up my important files. I don't think it's a Windows OS bug, when the drive dissapears, or becomes partly inaccesible, after a restart, the drive is also absent from the BIOS, until I do a full shutdown. I will check if there are some updates, but I'm pretty sure that most of the stuff should be up to date.
Yeah, I will test the drive in a different PC today, will keep you updated. Thanks again for the replies guys.

You are welcome, @Ante93! Hope, we'll get to the bottom of this.
If the WD Blue is still unresponsive in the other system, you should definitely check if it's still covered by the warranty on our website.
You might still be able to get a replacement and RMA the HDD.
However, for further assistance on this procedure, you should contact our Customer Support either by phone or e-mail.

Best of luck! Hope this helps as well.

Hello again, I've tested the HDD on another PC, and it worked perfectly. So most likely there is nothing wrong with my hard. Now I will test my PC without the WD disk, to see if I experience anything similar, especially when gaming. If everything will work perfectly, it might be wise to format the disk, what do you think? Also , is there a possibility that this issue is Power Supply related? I'm not 100% sure, but I think this started happening after I bought a new GPU (upgraded from r9 270x to GTX 1060).

That's good news, @Ante93! Yes, you should definitely check how the system will perform without the HDD connected. It's also a good idea to re-format it. If it doesn't work properly after that, another thing you could try is resetting BIOS. It will get your settings back to factory defaults, so you will need to re-configure the manual changes you have made in BIOS so far. However, it might also help the system perform better with the WD Blue connected as well. Since you have recently swapped your PSU, you should also check the connections and even re-seat them while the system is powered off. Afterwards, you might also want to consider testing the PSU.

Hope these tips help you as well.
Cheers,

Just a quick update. The PC was working perfectly without the WD HDD for 2-3days, but then I ran a benchmarking software and during the GPU part, the PC shut itself down and it wouldn't turn on until unplugged from the power. So, is it possible that all of my issues, including the the HDD issue, are caused by an unstable PSU? My current power supply is quite bad(LC Power LC6660 V2.2).
I just ordered the EVGA 750 GQ 80+ Gold PSU, it should arrive in a couple of days.

Yeah, you were right, It wasn't a power supply issue. Well, at least I had a good excuse to get rid of my old crappy PSU and buy a new one. So only 2 options now, since this is only happening to my WD HDD (I'm sure of this now) it's either a hard drive issue or a Windows 10 bug caused by the anniversary update. I think I will install Windows 7 in dual boot, and if the drive is going to work as intended there, I will know what is causing this issue.

It turns out that the HDD issue was caused by the Windows 10 anniversary update. So my HDD is thankfully not dying. But it is interesting that it only affected my WD HDD. I switched back to Windows 7, and now everything works perfectly. Microsoft is really incapable to make a bug free OS.

Maybe you are right, but the most important thing is that the problem is now gone. I might install Win 10 sometime in the future again, but for now I'm gonna stick with Windows 7. Thanks for all the help InvalidError and SuperSoph_WD.
