I was planning on buying a power supply and an r9 280x after that... but what are the power cords required for that graphics card? I read that it has an 8 pin and 6 pin but I was wondering if both were required? Or only one? Or how does that work... BTW I was planning to get this http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Green-650w-MAX-QUIET-ATX-Power-Supply-12cm-Fan-20-4Pin-SATA-AUX-On-Off-/311665295985?hash=item4890b30271:g:~8UAAOSwARZXmWBr Of course with this I need to get a 4pin to 8pin adapter but that should be fine. BTW anyone know where to get a good one of those cheap?

Solution
Back to your question, yes BOTH the 6 pin and the 8 pin must be used....it's not a case of using one or the other. And never use a 4 pin (molex) to 8 pin adaptor, if the PSU doesn't have enough PCIe power connectors there must be a reason, like it can't handle the load.

Is there a brand or type that you would recommend?

I've always liked the Gold rated EVGA Supernova power supplies, as they are good quality for their price. However if you want to save a bit, then the Bronze rated Supernova probably aren't too bad either.

I found this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1N83U90814 I also looked at some reviews and they all agreed it was a well built PSU with minimal voltage drop when under heavy load.
Personally I wouldn't go with a lower grade PSU, but if you must, at least look up some reviews on what you're buying. Remember the PSU is as important as any other component and it has the potential to damage every other component if it should fail.
