I have a GTX 970 atm but my friend upgraded to a GTX 1070 and gave me his old 970 (same model as mine ) for free, does GTX 970 SLI make sense or is it to problematic? and would GTX 970s still last a good deal of time? since it only has 3.5 GB VRAM?

P.S : I'm a 1080p gamer and I don't plan on 1440p or 4k gaming anytime soon

Solution

you get it for free? if i were you i would run them in SLI even if most of my games have no SLI support lol. you just need to tweak your games to not use more than 4GB.

Well I mean I have 2 so I might as well use both right? I was just wondering if I'd need anymore power as in like a GTX 1070 or GTX 1080 lol

1080p, is still good for 2 GTX 970s which is what I have atm. It'll still last you a while. 6GB of VRAM on a 1070 will be a waste unless you're pushing 1440p or widescreen 1080p which you're not.

So yea, hold on to these for a while, you should be fine.

I see your point, but I haven't gotten the GTX 970 yet because his is still on the way lol but when I get it I'll test it, I was just wondering if I should start trying to sell them to get a GTX 1070 or a GTX 1080 because since I'm a 1080p gamer, I wanted to know if it would make sense but I'm guessing the SLI GTX 970s would last a while from the other comments

I don't think selling them is a good option (morally speaking) since you got it for free. otherwise your friend could have sold it and help financing his new 1070.

go for the 970SLI since it must be the reason your friend gave it to you, you don't need a 1070 for 1080p gaming having a pair of 970s.

I would recommend getting a 144Hz monitor if you don't have one, since you will now be getting higher FPS in games.

Yeah that's why I was reluctant to sell them to and asked on the forum if the GTX 970 SLI made sense, and no I have a 60 Hz monitor , those 144 Hz only come with TN panels :\, I prefer IPS cause I like nice colours

There are 144Hz/IPS but they are quite pricey....

Yes it was free, and I will have to look up SLI guides because I'm new to it :|

Yes, normally I also would have suggested selling both 970s, and use the proceeds to purchase a 1070. But since it was a gift, you're kind of stuck. Yes, I recommend connecting both in SLI.

By the way, what an awesome friend you have! Holy crap. That's amazing that he gifted you a 970. Very cool.
