HTPC / NAS System

Hi guys,

I'm considering building a HTPC system which I can also use as a NAS. I want to be able to use the typical Netflix/Kodi/Youtube/music etc. on there while also having it always on and be able to access data easily from other devices on the network and over the internet.

This isn't something I've done before so any software/setup recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hardware-wise I'm looking at something along these lines:

In terms of software, will I be able to achieve what I want in Windows 10? If not, is there a better OS for this or would it be easier just to build a dedicated HTPC and buy a NAS separately?

Thanks!

Separate NAs and htpc is usually recommended to remove as much noise as possible from the htpc.
I run amahi for my nas (on fedora) and would be quite comfortable running that on my htpc also. The real sticking point is Netflix. Windows has a native app, Linux needs to run it in a browser. Not the end of the world, but more polished on windows.

So my advice - Windows 10 with kodi or so for htpc, separate nas attached to your router with dlna/plex capability. And get a hdhomerun.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah noisy systems are annoying but at the same time I like the idea of having it all in one place. I'll have a think.

I've heard of Plex, hdhomerun and dlna but not sure I understand what they are.

So Plex is a some media player software which allows you to stream your media over a network across almost all conceivable platforms?

Hdhomerun is a piece of hardware which is effectively a TV tuner which outputs to your network instead of a single display like a TV?

And dlna is a standard which confirms the device/software in question will work in a media streaming environment?

Does it sound like I understand what they are?
