How fast do fans (lets say a corsair sp120 fan) run when they are connected to a motherboard?

lets say im on chrome and doing school work, with lots of tabs open, how fast would they run? (gimme a percentage please) 50%? 60?

lets say im playing bf4, how fast would those fans run at?
------------
im asking this because my pc case has 3 speed fan switch so i want to kow if i should have those fans set to medium speed or high speed

Solution

Since you have thighter gaps on your cpu heatsink, its more important that the air gets trough all those fins and therefore you need more pressure...

When they're connected to a chassis fan-pin, they should run at 100 % if they're not configured in the bios or with software
But when they are hooked up to a fan controller on your pc case, then i cant tell you specificly at what percentage they run other than high is probably 100 %

SP120 is a case fan not a CPU fan. CPU and GPU fans respond to load and change their speeds accordingly while the case fans are configured according to the parts the Computer has inside.

Can u tell me the pc specs ? ( every pc varies) some PCs dont need even a single fan and some need multiple pumps and water cooling blocks.

Depends on a lot of things, the case you are using, the internal components (CPU, GPU mainly) that yor are using, the airflow of the system, the temperatures you are getting, etc...

Is just a balance between airflow (and the cooling power it brings) and the temperatures you get in the components whthin the case, as you will try to get the optimal temperatures with the less sound from the fans.

But just to give you some values, i would said on light load (browsing) use a 40% (under that some fans have problems starting), on high load (bf4) i would said 75% (over that some fans make a lot of noise and you have three of them).

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/

i asked others if i should replace the 212 evo fan with the corsair sp120 fan and they all said it would be good, plus i seen many builds using that fan as their cpu fan.

OH :) I misunderstood then ... Yes it depends on what CPU you have.

Oh if your using that as a CPU fan, then you can control and see the Fan speeds with the tool Speedfan
The SP120 is a great fan bu i personally would recommend you the Noctua NF F12 since they are really great in static pressure

ya i know but the noctura looks ugly lool. i plan to use two Corsair ML 120 or 140 fans for the front.

looking at the cfm of each, the corsair ML fans r better right?

ya but the design of the af series gives lower cfm, the sp replaces that series

No it does not replace that series since the AF Fans stand for Air Flow and are preferebly for cases or wide fin radiators and the SP series stands for static pressure which is more relevant when it comes to heatsink cooling or thight fin radiators

ahhh i though static pressure was more important or something, for a case is more pressure or more air flow important?

Since you have thighter gaps on your cpu heatsink, its more important that the air gets trough all those fins and therefore you need more pressure (static pressure)
but inside your case you want to get a lot of air in the get it exhausted again in the rear of your pc to remove the already heated up air out of your system
