Hey, i'm considering to buy a new CPU. The one i currently have is a i7-2600k (sandy bridge, LGA1155 if that helps. Motherboard would be a Gigabyte z68a-d3-b3.

I don't know much about this stuff when it gets too "techie". But the CPU is about 5 years old, so i was wondering if there was an upgrade available matching that socket and motherboard.

Solution
I suspect a reformat and installation on a new SSD (Samsung 850 EVO or anything Intel is a safe bet) would bring new life into it.
The best processor your motherboard will support is the i7 3770k, its a bit newer than yours and should have about 10-15% improvement. Why do you want to upgrade the processor? The i7 2600k is still a good chip. You should get an SSD to make your whole computer loading times alot faster etc, and a new graphics card if you want more gaming performance.

Stock vs stock, a 3770K is 10-15% faster, but 2600K's overclock higher on average so if you overclock, they're basically tied. In fact, overclocked, your 2600K is a match for even Intel's newest i7 processor at stock speeds. I see little point in replacing it, unless you have a specific need that it's not fulfilling.

Well, it's pretty much the only thing in my PC that's getting a bit dated. Just installed a nvidia 970. I just feel my PC is pretty slow overall, so i just wanted to upgrade everything that i can. And i'm not sure if my motherboard supports newer types of RAM either. I find it difficult to pinpoint exactly what i need :p
And i don't have good experiences with SSD, as the one i had installed when i bought my PC would work for about 1 week, then give me a BSOD.

An SSD is what you want mate, it was only a coincidence that it may have given you a BSOD, but i can assure you that you want an SSD. Other than that, If you only have 8GB ram, get 16GB. If you really want to upgrade your processor, i would suggest nothing less that an i7 6700k, cause anything lower than that would be pointless. An i7 6700k+mobo+ram will cost about $550, and if you havent upgraded to a new power supply im guessing you would need to also get one.

Wasn't that long ago my PSU burned out, so i just switched that out aswell. And i don't have much experience in fiddling with stuff like that, so getting a mobo upgrade would seem difficult for me. But yeah, my RAM is pretty old too. But i'm not sure my mobo supports more than 1333 mhz, so i'm not sure how to get around that.
The SSD i have would give me an BSOD everytime i tried using it. It would run fine for a week, then it wouldn't.

At the moment i have a 500w PSU.
For the SSD i think it was a Kingston, 120gb, which i believe is faulty. was pretty expensive too when i bought it, as my pc is about 6 years old.
But i'm not using the SSD at all, as it has given me a BSOD every time i decide to use it (hoping that it might work).
