My 1TB HD will not record over 300 items even though it is only half full. The TV has locked the HD so I can't download my TV recordings to my computer. LG blames the HD, Toshiba won't answer the phone. Can anyone help?

"locked the HD"? password protected, encrypted, how do you mean? can you view the files but not read or write to/from the drive?

they come with backup software preinstalled. are you sure this extra space isn't being take up by this software and any backups previously made?

a few of the Canvio drives have been discontinued and are not supported by Toshiba anymore. which are you using?

I have an external Toshiba Canvio 1TB usb3 HD attached to my LG 55" TV and has been recording TV shows with no problems until an error message came up saying "cannot record reached maximum number of recordable Items". I counted the items at 300 and if I delete 3 items it will then record 3 more. Even if the 3 are 10min or 3hrs long it makes no difference. And now because the TV has locked the HD to that one TV I cannot play it on any other TV or download to my computer. Also the TV display tells me that the HD has still over 460 GB of space left or 50 hours of HD recording.
I have spoken to LG Tech Support and they tell me it is a HD issue and nothing wrong with the TV. I have tried to ring Toshiba support at least 6 times and all I get is a phone message thanking me for calling and I listen to their ads for half an hour and then the call drops out.

there are more than one model of Canvio USB 3.0 drives; Basics, Connect II, Canvio Slim, Canvio Desk, and other discontinued versions. which one are you using? if it is a discontinued item Toshiba will not offer any support.

this problem you are experiencing sounds more like an issue with the TV's recording function, no matter what LG may tell you. my sister's Sony came with an external drive for this purpose and she gets the same problem with only being able to handle so many live screenshots, so many video recordings, and so many audio recordings. once a # limit in each category is reached it starts recording over previous ones even if space is free.

is the TV recording on it's own or do you have a cable service provider controlling the recording?

and again, ""locked the HD"? password protected, encrypted, how do you mean? can you view the files but not read or write to/from the drive?"
do you get errors? does the drive just not respond? has it been formatted to a special LG disk format that Windows cannot read?

I am staggered to know that there are that many models, however I have no idea which is mine as I have thrown away the box it came in and there is nothing on the case except the name Toshiba on lower front with an indicator light on the upper edge.

I agree with you that it must be a TV issue as I have used Hard Drives on my computer with more than 300 items.

The TV can record live TV programs through an antenna, I don't have cable.

By locked I mean locked. When I first connected the HD the TV wanted to do a format before it would record. And in doing so the HD is now locked to that TV only and will record and play back. But when I try to use it elsewhere the other TV's do not recognise it when its plugged in. I have a PC and a Mac and both cannot recognise it due to a probable LG format.

that sucks LG isn't acknowledging the problem. probably got a low-wage generic tech support person that just types in your question to a database and reads or copy/pastes back whatever generic answer is returned.
same way we did things at Intuit. we actually risked being reprimanded by going outside of the generic answer database with clients on the phone, even if we solved their issue.

all i would say is to maybe use this one for only larger/longer videos and buy another smaller HD to hold another 300 smaller shows/videos.
seems they should have warned you in the initial setup that there was a # limit.

My thoughts exactly, LG tech support ended up in the Philippines with some young girl who was reading of her prompts and giving basic advice like resetting the TV. Many calls later she would put me on hold while she checked with someone else. I told her I wanted to speak to whoever was giving her advice and....get this....they were not allowed to talk to customers....only through her!!
And what about Toshiba support not taking any calls, I didn't even get the chance to find out if they did support my Canvio or not.

As you may have guessed this is my first time on any forum and I appreciate greatly you taking the time to try to help me out.
