Really low framerates with Ati Radeon HD 6990

Hi!

I recently bought a Ati Radeon HD 6990 (model with 4gb of ram) from my friend -I know it's an old card- in the hopes to get slightly better performance, but after installing it and trying out F1 2016 and Witcher 3, I get horribly low framerates in both games. Both games were totally unplayable, even with low details and reduced resolution. The F1 game even had some graphical glitching with the skybox.

Nothing seemed to help. I had installed the latest drivers available. Then I had an idea to just try my previous display card for reference with the same games and I put it back in without installing any drivers for it, to just see if the framerates would be even worse.

This other card of mine was an Nvidia Geforce GTX 580 which I guess should be the weaker one among these two and almost as old as the Ati.

To my surprise I got good performance from the GTX 580 in both F1 and Witcher. Even maxed out the details and used 1920x1080 as the resolution and it didn't cripple the framerate.

And to my question; is there something wrong with the Ati and its setup or was it just overall a bad purchase?

My other specs are:
Windows 10
24 Gb of DDR3
Intel Core i5-3570K

Thanks for the reply, I installed the drivers you recommended, it did help a tiny amount in F1, did nothing to improve framerates in Witcher.

After enabling the crossfire feature, the frames in the F1 2016 jumped around from 20 to 25, but in Witcher it had almost no effect at all.

So yeah, changed the GTX 580 back into my rig for the time being, while considering what to buy for a new display card.
