Comparison Of Three Linux Systems

I am running Elementary Freya, Ubuntu 16.04, and Deepin 15, on an older Gateway computer (all 64 bit). They are all working, but only Elementary is working flawlessly. I think the problems are related to my computer, rather than the systems themselves.

Both the Ubuntu and Deepin have problems returning from suspend. On Deepin, I lose the wallpaper, and have to right click to reset it, and be able to use the desktop. On Ubuntu, the wallpaper comes back, but has little rows of dots, and the desktop won't respond to mouse or keyboard. Although the mouse cursor moves, clicking does nothing, and I can't type in my password. I have to reboot to use it.

Also, Ubuntu won't update properly. This is a problem I have also had with Zorin, and Elementary, but Elementary has sorted itself out and last night updated and is up now up to date. When the update issue occurs, I get an error message, which says I need to check my internet connection. Also, that some updates are available, and I could do a partial update if I want. I don't think it's my internet connection, as I've never had any problems downloading anything, including large music libraries.

I recently had Ubuntu 14.04, and it worked flawlessly. I suspect my graphics card may be the culprit, as the computer should be able to handle any of these systems without trouble. It's specs:

Gateway GT5656
6150SE chipset
AMD quad core, 3 GB processor
6 GB ram
2 WD 500 GB HDD's, 7200 rpm.
Nvidia 8400GS graphics (512 clock)

I'm posting this partly to just report my experience, but also to see if anyone has any thoughts on why the problems are happening, and what I might do about them. At this point, I'm favoring Elementary, since it works perfectly. However, I’m afraid that when the next version comes out, it may have the same problems.

The Ubuntu 16.04 problem is a known issues on all flavors right now (Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Kubuntu, etc.). They may have fixed it recently, but the work around for the funky return from suspend issue is to switch to A different tty terminal (ctrl+alt+F1 through F6) and switch back to tty7 (ctrl+alt+F7). It is recommended for the moment to disable suspend from light locker from what I have found on various Linux forums.

Thanks Timmoseus. So the problem may not be with my graphics card after all. After looking at some other threads, getting into the tty thing is probably over my head. I think that until they fix this (assuming they do), I'm just going to disable suspending. It's really no big deal to shut down and restart later. Plus, your computer is unavailable to hackers as a bonus! Fortunately, the problem is not happening with Elementary, which will cause me to use it as my default Linux OS. Which is fine. I like its simplicity, and it's also a nice looking system as well.

My limited experience with Elementary Linux was pleasant. The tty thing is, Linux runs multiple text based terminals. Ctrl+Alt+F1 switches from the Desktop (Ctrl+Alt+F7) to a Command Line Interface. For some reason, switching between the CLI and the GUI (Graphical User Interface) fixes the problems that 16.04 is facing. There are 6 terminals that you can be logged into at the same time, and one GUI. The terminals are F1 - F6 on the keyboard. F7 is typically reserved for the GUI.

An update: Ubuntu 16.04 has sorted itself out, no more issues there. Still have the problem with Deepin, but it's easy to live with.

I also tried Solus 1.2, really liked it until I tried updating, after which it wouldn't boot. I deleted it, but will probably try it again. They have just released 1.2.1, the last point release, after which they will have rolling updates. It's a fast OS designed specifically for desktops/laptops. Built from scratch, and very impressive. A good choice for those coming from Windows.

I also got rid of Elementary. I'm going to put Zorin 12 in that partition, when it's finally released (in beta now). I decided that elemntary is just not full-featured enough. You have to install an office suite yourself. As well as a decent browser. But it's a great distro for just cruising the web.
