Hi,

I recently purchased an ASUS Z170-P motherboard and an I5-6600K CPU.

I have a Power X3 ATX 500w power supply.

The power supply only has a 4 pin connector for the CPU but the Motherboard has 8 sockets for the CPU power.

I won't be overclocking until I buy a new power supply next month but want to use the computer before this.

So, can I plug in the 4 pin into the 8 pin CPU and powering up without fear of damaging it or the motherboard?

Thanks in advance,

Kind regards

David

A 500W PSU would be fine as long as it's 80+ certified.
I have used 4 pin on 8 pin boards many times(sometimes for testing and sometimes just because the power supply was old, but still upto the task.), but "Power X3 ATX 500w" sounds very generic. How much 12 volt current(amps) does that thing have?

Once you get a dedicated card in, all bets may be off depending on the power supply.

Hi Nukemaster, my actual power supply is an ATX-500204 - I have no idea what voltage that is. If I were to buy a new power supply with 6(x2) pins for the CPU would a new 500w PSU be enough?

I do have a graphics card + an additional case fan to power as well as a CPU, motherboard, optical drive, front case slots (USB etc) and an SSD hard drive.

Thanks for the help and quick responses everybody, really appreciate it.

In case it helps anyone in the future I've picked a Corsair CP-9020097 550w as its budget friendly and has positive reviews.

Well it's better than what you have now, but the VS is not good and is considered the worst PSU Corsair sells, right next to the older CX units.
