Hey everyone,
I've been a long time lurker, and I'm finally building a new pc.

My goals are thus:
1)
Two brands besides intel for the whole build.
My thoughts on this is so it can help alleviate "blaming the other guy." Basically I'm wanting to go Corsair for the case and coolers etc. And I've been on the fence between MSI and ASUS for the moboard and gpu.

2)
Computer is a workstation mainly for 2d graphics in very high pixel count. 300dpi+ at 24" × 36" at the largest.

3)
For a small percentage extra, being able to game adequately would be an epic bonus.

Now on to my "story"
I went to Frys because mail here in the boonies isn't the most reliable.

The Asus z170-a was sold out along with the -ar, Sabertooth and Ranger. All boards I was contemplating.

I'm looking for fairly good quality audio, no wireless, 3+ sata, and the ability to have at least 2 dedicated USB2.0s for my hotas, along with at least another 4 USB for mouse & keyboard, and other accessories. Namely my guitar pickup for rocksmith can't be off the moboard to help with latency.

So I'm looking for a good "all-rounder" moboard without too many extra doodads I don't need.

I then saw the z170 pro-gaming, which is "on sale" and picked that up after some salesmanship.

I don't intend to overclock, I have enough issues with heating in Arizona in August. I also have a cat that sheds far more than I'd like. I was recommended the i5 6500 3.2ghz. I figured that's the same power as my dying 960 i7 that's been reliable til now for over 6 years so I grabbed that thinking I'd save where I can.

But then, all their "budget" ram by Corsair was "sold out." I mean every kind under $100... And yes, I mean this in the most shady used-car salesman way possible lol.

So I ended up with Corsair vengeance led 3200mhz 2* 8gb sticks.

Which I'm now thinking those combined with the moboard may actually be an accidental good thing.

That ram speed is so much faster than my current corsair esx 1333mhz 3*4 gb ddr3. From what I've read here, those added speeds may help my work flow become way more efficient.

Right now it's just the art itself, but there will be a youtube, along with dedicated website, and pinterest and deviantart, and Facebook running practically 24/7 along with Pandora keeping me sane lol.

(Being an artist, and making a decent wage is definitely not the "Van Gogh approach")

Here's the "build" now in its entirety, including things I already have:

Now I'm wondering at those costs, a <10% increase in cost to get to a 6700k...

I'm debating "why not?" And after checking out newegg, I'm nervous about the moboard.

What do you guys recommend for what I'm using it for?

Also on budget -
I have an easy $250 wiggle room from where I currently sit, for whatever reason.

I want a solid pc, and in comparison to my Dodge Coronet restoration with a 400B block and t-56, this is quite affordable lol.

I'm just also kinda curious if I got fleeced thanks to that attitude.

Akso, please forgive autocorrect snafus and general lack of good composition. I'm on my phone now til I get this new pc built.

Knocked it down over $100. That was such a terrible psu choice btw. $320 is also a pretty bad price for a 1060 so I switched from Asus to Gigabyte. You were overpaying for the RAM by a large margin, you certainly don't need so many case fans, and just wow at the price of that keyboard!!

Psu is coming off my old pc, it's less than a year old.

And after dealing with the old gigabyte x58-ud3r, I'd rather avoid them. I'm just not a fan of their website interface for drivers.

The keyboard, yeah, I just wanted something really over the top for once. I adore it. It does lightsaber animations, all sorts of extra stupididness, but I really wanted a mechanical keyboard.

I type easily 150+ and like adjusting my build to an i7, the extra $50 or so to go full rgb just felt fun.

As for the fans, including the gpu, it's because I live in Arizona. Right now, AC is set "cold" at 85 degrees. We're happy to hit low 90s at night right now.

So are they overkill? I have no problem having less, but at the same time, it's a 120mile one way trip to the closest computer store worth anything.
