I just got a new router after using a dinosaur TEW-652BRP router. I now have a Netgear WNDR4000. My download speed with the old router was around 10mb/s but now it is cut in half at 5mb/s and I have no idea why. I would have thought it was stay the same and when I look at the LAN lights on the router, my computer is the only one that has an amber light which means it is not getting the gigabit speed. I'm using a TP-Link AV500 powerline kit and I'm wondering if this has anything to do with it.

Just a reminder that the OP got double the speed before upgrading the router. This was with the SAME powerline connection!

I would suggest using the powerline module to connect a different computer. If you have a laptop with an ethernet connection that would be ideal. Measure the speed. That will help isolate whether the problem is the port, powerline, or your computer.

If you can temporarily connect via ethernet cable, string it down the halls, and run a test that would also be helpful. Plug it into Lan1 so the only difference is the powerline connection.

But why is my speed cut in half compared to before?

A possibility is that the connection is only half duplex. If you query the status of the connection on your PC does it report 100Mbps? Half or full duplex?

On the new router does it tell you that status of the ethernet ports? See if the manual describes the indicator lights and what a 100Mbps full vs. half duplex connection looks like.

Probably time to either pull an ethernet cable or get a better powerline product.

I looked at the status of the connections already and it says 100M/Full so I guess that means full duplex(?)

What speed do you get if you plug directly into the router.

Powerline speed can be affected by the quality of the wires in your house. There are a tiny number of houses they do not run at all in.

If your router has the ability to display the port speed does it detect the port as full or half duplex.
