Recently I had to reload a HP 1040 G3 laptop because I ran into issues. Where I work we load all of our PCs and laptops through PXE. All of our PCs are W7 64 bit. This is my first time working with this model and for some reason none of the drivers loaded on the laptop. Normally I would just load them manually but unfortunately not only did the network driver not install but the USB also did not install. Before booting into windows I can get to the USB drive and the network, but of course as soon as I boot into Windows those are gone again. I did try reloading the PC, but again none of the drivers installed. Then I thought I would just take the HD out and hook it up external to my PC and put it on like that but when I took the HD out I found I do not have the right adapter for it. So I am pretty frustrated at this point, so I thought I would ask the question if anyone knew if there was a way to download the driver on the computer before booting into windows. Thanks in advance to everyone that try's to help me with this issue. I also thought I would point out that I do not configure the our image from our PXE server, I know the best way to install the driver is to get that fixed, but right now the person who is in charge of that is not around to fix the issue. Again thanks again for everyone's help.

Solution
You need to contact whoever setup your images and have them add the drivers to the OS setup process.

The opening Notepad thing is a bit confusing, that's just a text editor how are you getting to files on a USB stick from that?

I figured it out. If anyone uses PXE to load PCs and runs into this issue when you get to the CMD line start up complete type Notepad then go to open. From there you can go to the USB drive and copy drivers to the HD. What a pain, but at least I now have my drivers.

Yes the team that does configures the OS setup process needs to add those drivers. They just were not around during that time, so I was trying to find a work around.

Notepad I click file- open- from windows explorer I was able to copy from the flash drive drivers I needed and place drivers on the C drive. I know it was a different way to get to the drivers on the HD, but what ever works right. : )
