Hm, well the difference between Skylake i5 and Ivy Bridge i5 is maybe a 15% improvement in IPC. 8gb of memory is pushing it these days for multitasking while gaming, 16gb is much for what you're looking for.

I can't say for certain if your i5 3570k + 16gb will give you the performance you're looking for. But I definitely think a 6700k is more than enough for your purposes and a 6 core chip is overkill.

I can tell you that right now I'm running Prime95 28.9 (punishing) in the background on all 4 cores of my 4440 and I'm noticing almost no delay with chrome or spotify.

Was hesitant to try an i5 since I didn't know how big the performance difference was in the generation gap; mine currently isn't seemless when doing all of that.

It depends which generation i5 you have. What kind of performance issues are you encountering, and on which games/settings? How much does your FPS drop when you have all that open compared to when you have only the game running?

FWIW I don't see any issues like that when gaming with a lot going on in the background on my i5-4440 in 1080p. But I also only have an R9 280 so my CPU has plenty of headroom.

It's not the FPS I'm talking about, it's the speed at which everything can be opened, loaded, performing tasks within the programs while the game is running.

Games such as GTA 5, Witcher 3, Rise of the Tombraider. Basically seemless speedy response from those programs if I alt tab out of the game.

I have a MSI R7970 Lightning at the moment, but building a new PC with a 1070 or 1080

That's great then, I'll just get that and 16gigs. Thanks for the help!

The Witcher 3 asks for a minimum of 6 GB Ram, so it's easy to think Chrome could be eating the rest. Easy enough to check with Task Manager. And some loading is inevitable no matter how much RAM you've got. If you don't already have one, an SSD for the OS is probably the biggest performance upgrade for the price when it comes to responsiveness.
