Hey, guys. I need to build a server for my ITS computer classes. It has to have Hyper-v and SLAC, we will be running windows server 2012.

I already have some PC parts laying around from old builds and I'm hoping that I can repurpose them for this.

4x4GB ddr3 1600 Mhz G.Skill RAM
Asus P8z77-v Pro Motherboard 1155 socket CPU.
Multiple PSU's, Case Fans, CPU Coolers, HDDs/SSDs and Cases, etc.

All I need to order is a CPU. From what I've ready the 3570k will not work (lacks virtualization for I/O?, but the 3570 will. IS this true for my needs? Will a 3770k work or a 3770? I'd prefer to atleast re-use my old Mobo if possible!

Well...an i7 would be 'better' than an i5.
But either will work.

I've personally run 2 x Linux OS, WinServer2012, and WIn 8.1 inside a Win 8.1 host system, all at the same time. On this current i5-3570k.

It depends on what you actually plan to do with these VM's, and the rest of the system.
You needs lots of RAM.

Yeah I believe we will be running multiple virtual VM's, but server 2012 was specifically mentioned and through Hyper-V. Would a 3770 be better for this? I've heard that K variant CPU's are not great for VM's? Why is that? Also would a 3770s work?
