So i got the AT2020, and got https://www.amazon.com/InnoGear-Condenser-Microphone-Recording-Equipment/dp/B00KAPGLQC to power it.

was wondering if i could hook that phantom power to my computer with an xlr-to-usb cable as per this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CBLD_3y3fE or do i need a separate audio interface?

also, if i don't need to buy an audio interface, i'm not sure what types of xlr cables i need, if i'm correct it's a female to female xlr to power the mic and a male to usb cable to connect it to the computer?

Solution

Why didn't you try the AT2500 then? It's basically exclusive to SP and japan, cheaper than the AT2020usb, and still good enough for most (though it does lose some high end, humans can't produce those sounds anyway)

Hard to recommend anything to you due to shipping issues, the best idea would be to go to a local music shop and ask about low cost options. They will be better equipped to help you.
At this point you should just try returning everything and just buying the AT2020USB+ instead, it'll end up costing near the same and will be MUCH easier to use.

If you want a full package xlr (with phantom power) to USB system you might as well get something like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E6T56CM/

i was looking at that, unfortunately it does not ship to singapore which was why i was asking about the phantom power to computer set up, the usb version also did not ship to singapore which was why i went for this version instead.

was just looking on a list on reddit, the at2500 wasn't on there. i probably will go to a local shop but the mic'll work if i just get a fem xlr to male usb and hook that to the phantom supply and computer right?

Reddit isn't a real site... check actual stores, 99% chance you could have gotten the 2020usb to begin with.

And yes, it should work, but it won't necessarily work well. Cheap sound cards built into those cables tend to sound pretty terrible, and if it's not properly isolated you could end up blowing out your USB port, or like one guy here a while back, just have a lot of buzzing and overall useless mic

just an update in case you cared, i'm getting the scarlett 2i2 tomorrow.

Big spender ;)

With that the setup will be really easy, mic to scarlett, scarlett to PC, and press the 48V phantom power button to get it to work. If you want headphone mix in remember to plug the headphones into the scarlett, it works much better than "listen to" setting in windows.

As long as you have a boom stand (desk clamp with arm if necessary, though standalone is usually cheaper and better) and find a decent distance between your mouth and the mic in comparison with other noise sources, you should have some great audio
