Hi,

I am really confused what Ethanet Cable I should get to connect my PC to my home network.

Could you please suggest the best?

Thanks!

Cat 5e is fine, it supports up to 1gb or 1000mbps. Unless your internet speeds can surpass that or your transferring 100's of GB from computer to computer in your house there is no need for cat 6.

Cat5e max speed is 1gbps @ about $.20 a foot
cat6 max speed is 10gbps @ about $.40 a foot

For a home application cat6 is a waste, untill ISP's start to offer over 1gbps connections (for residential) there is no need for cat6. Im going to guess where he lives that the building is at least 15 years old and has some version of cat5 wiring. If his network cant sustain more then 1gbps then he might as well get fiber optic because anything over cat5e specs is a waste of money, unless he looking to drop about $500 to upgrade his network to cat6 standards which it will still be brought to its knees by his ISP

Actually you want cat6a cable to run 10g. Cat6 will run 10g but not at maximum distance. It works but it is not actually certified for any particular distance. Cat6 cable pretty has been a dead standard since it was invented, it was designed to run 1g over 2 pair rather than 4 pair and no equipment manufactures went with that standard.

To the OP be very sure not to buy CCA (copper clad aluminum). Any solid copper cat5e cable will work fine....if you happen to find cat6 on sale or something it does not hurt to use it.

OP says he's confused, and now you have given him 4 different answers! :D

Once helpfully I was trying to explaining a fellow air traveller why a plane maybe a few minutes late, off-hand, "oh the pilot is just probably doing a go-round" and this passenger freaked! Sometimes too much information no good. :)
