Audio keeps dropping after GPU switch

So I recently upgraded from a 750 Ti to a RX 480. Graphics-wise the switch went smoothly, though the 480 sounds like a jet engine compared to the whisper quiet 750. Strangely, the only persistent issue is audio related.

I installed up-to-date audio drivers for both Realtek and AMD HIgh Definition Audio, which had everything working well. But after leaving my computer for an hour or so and returning, the audio doesn't work. According to Windows tests there's nothing wrong -- I'm just not hearing anything. The only fix I've found is temporary: I uninstall and reinstall the drivers for both Realtek and AMD and, presto!, it works. But then the cycle repeats. I leave my PC for anything over an hour and once again come back to a computer without sound, forcing me to uninstall and reinstall all over again.

Has anyone ever encountered this or a similar issue? Any ideas for more permanent fixes?

Thanks!

I'm just using HDMI audio from the graphics card to my monitor, which has built-in speakers.

When it next stops working, check what the default playback device is set under the sound options. Might just be something changing the default playback device - Do you plug a headset/headphones in?

I've checked that: the default is set to my monitor, which is listed as a "high definition audio device," or something like that. I do occasionally use headphones, though, but I've tried not plugging them in for a long enough period to see if the cycle persists, and it does.

Okay I'll take a look when I'm at my desktop later tonight and send you a reply.

Thanks!

Okay I checked the default audio device after a sound drop as RobCrezz suggested -- it is indeed still listed as my monitor, calling it an "AMD High Definition Audio Device," so no change there. And I uninstalled the drivers for Realtek altogether -- no change there either. Maybe there's a way to completely uninstall Realtek that will make a difference, but I can't find the software listed in the uninstall section of the control panel -- weird.

As for my monitor going to sleep, I never thought of that but yes, I do have it set to turn off after 20 minutes or so. Maybe that's the catalyst for the sound dropping every so often.

Any suggestions for next steps?

Thanks!

Also worth mentioning that I did notice video playback issues after a sound drop just now. I'm using YouTube videos to test sound and they have a lot of trouble loading. I also tried getting The Witcher 3 up-and-running: I can get to the title screen but can't load a save. That's not an issue before a sound drop. I uninstall and reinstall AMD audio drivers and the problems disappear.

I guess the video and graphic software issues pin this problem to the GPU, no?

Well I think it's GPU related, for sure, but I'm not convinced it's a hardware problem. It seems to me more likely that it's a software compatibility issue, since fiddling with drivers has an effect.
