Cable Modem Loses WAN Connection While Streaming HBO

I have an extremely frustrating problem that I'm not sure I have enough information to figure out... The problem is that just about anytime I watch HBO-GO (via Xbox One, hard-wired to my router, BTW), I can get 15-20 minutes in and then my modem loses its WAN connection (if I call the ISP they can no longer communicate with it). If I power cycle the modem the issue is resolved, until it happens again.

I have tried 3 different modems (first, a refurb Cisco DPC3010 that I just bought, then a replacement one of the same model, then a brand new Arris SB6141) and they all have the exact same problem.

My modem is connected to my own router, and I have tried 2 different routers. The main router I have used is a Linksys WRT54G (v5), which is several years old. The second one I've tried is a Linksys WRT54GS2 (v1) that I bought as a refurb in 2013. I had used both of these routers at home in the past and when I put them away a few years ago they were working fine.

When the issue occurs, my hard-wired Xbox One and all my other (wireless) devices are affected, and when I call the ISP to check their communications with the modem they tell me they can't reach it. If I power cycle the modem it brings communications back online, and I do not need to reset the router at all. This makes me think it's a modem issue, which is why I have tried 3 different ones (the most recent a brand new one) to try to rule that out.

Other details are that when the issue occurs my work laptop has been using the wifi connection in order to connect to my employer via VPN (not sure if this is relevant, but wanted to mention).

Can a router mess up a modem's connection to the ISP? I assumed a new modem wouldn't care what kind of router it was communicating with, but what do I know. Again, the routers I have are older (one is 3+ years old and the other probably 8+ years old).

I also take my newly installed home wiring (installed by cable provider) as being fine, but of course anything is possible...

I am really at a loss, as far as what I need to do/check to get to the bottom of this extremely frustrating issue. Can anyone help me out? Thanks so much!

I have WOW / WideOpenWest. My guess is that if I use their rental equipment it'll be fine. I'm almost at that step in the diagnostic process, but just bought a new router from Costco... So I'll see if it still happens with the new router, and if not I guess I'll be in good shape. At this point I know it's not the modem because I've already tried three different ones, one of them brand new and the other two refurbs.

I mean, the router I am using now is super old... Running firmware from like 2008 with the latest DD-WRT available for it being from 2009. Just seems odd that when the issue occurs it's the modem that needs to be reset to restore service.

The new router was $160 and the new modem $80... So that's basically 2 years of a cable modem/router rental from the provider. Might be less hassle with their equipment, since they can't point the finger at me when something goes wrong.
