So the other day I went to my cousins house and they use direct tv as their ISP, I noticed that they are using a rj-11 port for Internet. I did some research and found a technology called ADSL which basically carries internet thought a phones copper line. Is that what direct-tv uses?

DirectTV is broadcasting its signal thru satellite. They might provide for sat internet, too, but it wouild not come on RJ11 jack. OTOH, many settop boxes need a phone line for "phonning" home (eg to confirm a subscription), or for plain caller ID service.

What you saw as RJ11 is DSL service running thru existing phone wires. DirectTV are partnering with AT&T.

To sum it up: Unless you have DSL service coming from the phone company, RJ11 and Internet do not mix.

Ok so basically it's running DSL through the RJ-11 port, and when you say "running DSL through a wire", isn't that wire basically carrying Internet? I just don't understand when people say that.

Satellite TV don't do Internet directly (through the dish), they partner with a landline service like AT&T DSL as mentioned.

When you said do Internet via RJ11, I wager what you really wanted to ask is, can I set up a NEWORK with RJ11. The quick answer is no.

Having Internet and having a home network, commonly called a LAN, are two slightly different things.
