I have had 1 TB seagate 7200 barracuda as one of my storage drives for years it has always made a loud harddrive noise when working but if not accessed it is silent , but recently it has began making a weird ticktock noise constantly , the first thought is that the drive is dying , which would be no wonder as the HDD has been with me for 3 computers , i played around with the power and SATA cables testing different ones but the same result ticktock noise like a clock , but when i plugged it into my old computer the noise stopped and even the working noise is quieter . Both systems are running win 10 , the difference is that old one is using SATA II and my main rig is SATA III , the only thing i could think of was that maybe windows was trying to index the drive or something but task manger shows zero activity on the drive .
Any thoughts ? Thanks to anyone who reply's .

Update : i have confirmed that this is not a power issue i used the old rigs power while using the main rigs SATA and vice versa and still the same issue ticktock noise with my main rigs SATA , no noise in any other configuration .

Hey there, @Storydiver!

Good job with the troubleshooting so far! I'd strongly recommend backing up all the data from that HDD somewhere else, though, before proceeding with the troubleshooting. Sounds like you have had this drive for quite some time, and unfortunately, those ticking noises could actually indicate internal hardware failure. :( I'd suggest you backup your files and then test the HDD using its brand-specific manufacturer's diagnostic utility . Their tool will help you determine the health and SMART stats of the drive. Of course, you should keep in mind that some hardware corruption could go undetected by the software tools.

The noises could also be coming from improper mounting of the drive inside the rig. So I'd strongly recommend making sure there are no loose screws when you put the HDD in your main system. If you have an external enclosure or a docking station (with an AC adapter since it's a 3.5" drive), you could also try connecting the HDD externally to see if the noises are still present. Have you tested your PSU?

Keep me posted with the troubleshooting. Hope this helps.

Thank for the advice I already had external backups plus I made internal ones . As you can see from my previous update I confirm definitely that this is not a PSU issue ,as for mounting when testing I took the drive out of the case and still the same problem ticktock noise only with my main rigs sata cable ( I tested 3 diffrent sata cables plus ports ) , so I figure that this must either a motherboard or OS issue . In a few days I should have acces to third computer both with sata II and sata III I will do futher testing there , also I'll check the drive with seagates seatools.

PS: even if I solve the noise I may just decided to chuck the drive , I hadnt truly noitced how loud the drive was , till it's apsence , i run all corsair quite edition fans so it's problely the single loudest thing in my system .
