What's my best option to connect to an existing system?

I recently moved in with my girlfriend and moved my entire computer setup into her room. I do a lot of work online and download/upload a lot so a good connection is a must.

They have a time warner cable bundle of tv/home phone/internet. The modem and router are both way too far to run a cat5 cable through the rooms.

I bought a cheap usb wifi adapter which of course did not work at all. I'm sure a more expensive model will work, but will the speed suffer? My girlfriend's laptop constantly loses connection and we have to troubleshoot the internet to get it back so I'm worried about that with the wireless connection.

I was also looking at "powerlines", where you connect one to the router and it sends through the internal wiring to another plugged in next to your computer. Would that work all fine for a hardwired desktop connection? I see that they talk more about it being used for tvs and other devices but it would work fine with my desktop right? And that would provide a faster and more reliable connection than wireless correct?

My last option, which of course would be the most reliable, is running a cat5 under the house directly to the modem. I'm staying away from this one as much as I can but if I need to do this I dont mind.

There is also an unused coaxial cable right under my desk that used to connect to the TV. I called time warner hoping I could somehow use this to hardwire ethernet to my desktop and they said I could add a whole nother modem and router there. Are there any problems that could arise from this? Having two modems in the house?

I feel like I'm leaning more towards the powerline, as I'd like a hardwired ethernet connection, but if it's going to give the same performance as a wireless usb adapter, then I would just go with that.

What do you think is my best option? Thankyou very much for your replies.

Obviously the ethernet will always be the best but finding nasty spiders under a house would make me think about it too. Lots of work but would likely be cheaper also.

Powerline works very well in most houses and is simple to install. It is fairly inexpensive. The older technology did not work as well so try to get a
av500 or av600/1200. You can get models that have wireless in the remote end or you can use a old router as a AP to provide wireless and more ethernet ports.

If the powerline does not work you also have the option of using MoCA since you have a coax cable. These are not as cheap as powerline.

Using a second modem technically will work if the ISP will allow it but they will want to charge you as if it were a...

Using a second modem technically will work if the ISP will allow it but they will want to charge you as if it were a separate connection. Way too many people would run it to their neighbors house if they let you do it for free.
