Basically I'm upgrading to a z170 board for my 6700k and I want to know what how to go about doing it. My old motherboard is this:
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5526#ov
and my new one will be this:
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5564#ov
They are very similar and my main concern is the cpu cooler, I have a Kraken x41 and I want to know about the thermal paste, do I have to buy new paste and clean the old stuff off (i used what was on the cooler to begin with) and if i do need new paste what should I get?

Solution
I'd put new compound on the CPU when you change, best approach I've found is Make sure Windows is up to date, make backups of all your data files, then make the switch, Win will generally see the new hardware, load default drivers for it and you'll be up and running. Next, update the latest mobo drivers from the mobo's website (those on the disk will prob be out of date, run a good registry cleaner (Wise has a good free version) then reactivate Win and your done ;)
You always want to clean off old paste and use new when you remount any cooler.
Most any will do.
MX2 and AS5 are popular.

Your current windows drive will likely boot.
Then all you will need to do will be to install the new drivers that come with your new motherboard.

If your windows is oem, which is tied to the motherboard, you may or may not have a reactivation issue.
