Ethernet working on one computer but not another

I have just wired up an ethernet cable to an already working wireless setup. I now have my laptop and desktop next to each other. When I plug the cable into the laptop, it works just fine, with full access to router and internet. No interventions required. Not so in the desktop. Both have what appear to be the same Realtek PCIe controller. I have compared the settings in all the detail I can - auto-detect, auto management of speed. I have updated the driver on the desktop. I have tried one suggestion I found - to disable the TCP/IPv6 option - without getting any difference in results.

The two computers are on different windows versions. I accepted the W10 update for the laptop, but the desktop is still on W7. But surely that should not make a difference? I also noticed that the desktop had an option for Broadband PPPoE. (Microsoft Virtual Miniport adapter) I couldn't get access to internet with that and have disabled it. Results the same whether it is present or not as far as I can tell

The desktop seems to recognise that I am connected to the router. However, if I try to access the internet it doesn't allow that. Most options that I try give Error 651. On the router status, there is a cabled device that is detected, but it shows up as unknown, while recognising my desktop as an identified device on the wireless connection.

I am really stumped by this. I have just moved house and wireless is losing me about 40% of my service speed in this location so I would really like to get the LAN working on my main machine. Any help that you can offer will be received with great appreciation.

Thanks Philip. I have tried disabling the wireless adapter but with no benefit. I am reluctant to remove it physically because I would ideally like to have both options available to me, as they are on the laptop.
