Hi all,

FX 8350
8gb DDr3
R9 290
CX 750m corsair
Asrock 980DE3/U3S3

Ok I just built a new PC and my problem started when I used a cheap 750w psu. I would turn on the PC and everything would be fine apart from the CPU Fan. This started to get louder and louder as the computer loaded. I check the cpu temperature and it was floating around 30-45. When I started up a game (Arma 3) it would get to the loading screen then bam the system would just shut off. After speaking to a few people they recommended buying a trusted psu so I bought a corsair cx750m. Plugged everything in and the same problem occurred with the cpu fan being loud. The weird thing is I could now get further into Arma 3 and play for about 20 seconds before the PC would shut off. I'm struggling to the find the problem and would appreciate help.

Something to note. When attaching the cpu fan I had to unscrew the heat sink a little to fit the fan on. May this be the cause of the problem as it may not be screwed in all the way down?

Thank you

Solution
Try running a prime95 stress test to rule out the GPU and isolate the problem to the mobo to see if Onus' theory is correct. Though, it is true that GPU heat can contribute to motherboards getting hot, so it may not be a 100℅ test but still worth a shot.

Hey Matt,

It sounds like you're over heating for sure. The heat-sink you unscrewed is no longer making contact to your CPU. It needs to make contact for the heat to transfer.

Re-tighten your CPU heat-sink. If you have thermal paste, take off the cooler completely and re-apply paste, then tighten down.

Good luck let me know how it goes.

If tightening / re-attaching the HSF does not fix this, then I believe the 4+1 VRMs on your 700-series motherboard (calling it a "980" is, imho, a lie) can't take the demands of your CPU, even though it is on the CPU Support list; they are what is overheating.
Other than replacing your motherboard with a "true" 900-series board, that has more VRM phases, and heatsinks on them (likely to require a new Windows license as well, although MS may reactivate yours), you might try getting something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835708011 to put on the MOSFETs, and make sure you have good airflow through your case.

Hi,

Ok so i have remounted the heatsink and applied some more thermal paste. Weird thing is that i was able to play for a short while (5-10mins) on singleplayer. when i switched over to multiplayer the system would just crash. The cpu fan is still being very loud. Is it possible the motherboard or cpu is faulty? Should i buy a aftermarket cpu cooler? or maybe buying some case fans.
