Is it possible for a faulty GPU to damage a power supply?

Computer was working fine for over two years, then hard-locked without warning. The image and audio were completely frozen, with no blue screen, and I had to hold the power button to power off the computer. Computer then would no longer POST, resetting every couple of seconds with no beep code and no image output. I reset the CMOS and disconnected everything from the motherboard except for PSU and CPU. During POST the motherboard speaker now outputs a beep code signifying "bad power supply".

The thing is, almost this exact same problem happened the day that I added my current GPU to this computer. It had been working fine for a week with onboard graphics and an entirely different power supply, one from a respectable brand and which was adequate in terms of wattage. I added the GPU, started playing a game, and within minutes the computer hard-locked. When I tried to turn it back on it just powered on and off continuously.

At the time, I thought it could be the motherboard, so I took it back and exchanged it for a brand new one, which did not solve the problem. Then I turned my attention to the power supply, returning it and buying one with 100 more watts, gold rated, from a different respectable company. Once that was installed, my system booted just fine and has been going strong for over two years until today. In that time the only upgrades have been to add a stick of memory and change the case, and those upgrades were made long ago.

My question is, am I the unluckiest guy on the planet, or is my GPU destroying my power supplies? I'm now in the process of RMA'ing my current one, and I'm confident that replacing it will fix the problem. But will I have to go through the same process some time in the future?

GPU is an EVGA GTX 770, current power supply is an EVGA NEX650G, 650W. Old power supply was actually only 50W less now that I look it up, a Corsair CX600.
