I've come into a small windfall and as its also getting close to my Bday, I'm pooling a bit of resources, with a potential of $700~ to replace my current nVidia 670 GTX and 1x8Gb PC-2333 with some future proofing.

I'm running on air, but that can change, with an i5-3570k Ivy. I'm a builder and can OC for days.

Assume that I'd prefer a 16Gb ram setup x4/x2 AND would love the best bang for the buck GPU solution. I really want to stick with nVidia, and am open to SLi, if 2 is better than 1 at the moment. Would you drop the coins for a 1080?

I answered my own damn questions with 30 seconds of research. >.> Took me longer to reply to both of you than it did for me to answer it for myself. lol.

That being said, RAM speeds don't relate to real-world gains in FPS, in single application gaming. Quality 2400 is a better cost equivalent than $300 of 3000.

add another stick to match what you have for 16gb total, 8gb x 2

get a cryorig h5 for you cpu, if you dont have a decent cooler

overclock, 3570k still top of the line

I suggest upgrading into a 1440p monitor with a gtx 1070 for a damn impressive upgrade all around

I'm definitely feeling the GTX 1070 solution after reading a few opinions on the differences between it and the 1080.

On the RAM issue- I forgot to say that I have to replace the existing 8G sticks as its not compatible (works, won't clock to 2333 in its pair), so I'm looking at a set of 2x8 3000's. Would YOU drop the cash on that speed? Or get some 2800/2666's instead and save a bit?

I gave a good look at the real-world differences between the GTX 1080's & 70's, and I'm thinking I'll go for the 70 and put the ~$200 savings into replacing the RAM.

Have you ever noticed a gaming/real-world difference between DD3 3000 & say 2800/2666's? I have to replace the existing 8G stick as its not compatible and won't clock right.

You are correct in that you would notice absolutely nothing when going even from 1666mhz ram to ddr4 4000 when gaming. Honestly, I don't see a reason to upgrade your ram at the moment unless you find your self getting close to that 8gb mark.

you do see a bit of a gain on overclocked processors, but it is not worth it to go beyond 2133 honestly

especially considering the price
