I am making a nice buold but I have never made a decent spec PC from scratch. I've built dozens of pre-2010 low end builds though, so I am somewhat experienced.

I have the case, a Cooler Master Haf X, But I am planning on getting:
Intel Core i5-6600
8GB (to start) 2666MHz DDR4 unbuffered
All on an ASUS Z170P

I already have An mSATA SSD too and a bunch of HDDs.

Am I missing something? I have an inkling I need to buy a fan for the i5 but don't know where to find one.

Anything else I need to buy please suggest!
Preferably a need not a should have.
Thanks!

Just confirming, you're using a ASUS Z170-P and not a ASUS Z170-P D3 right? The D3 uses DDR3L so you'd want to make sure on that.

One thing not mentioned in your parts is a PSU and a GPU. Do you have one of each already?

Also, you don't "need" a cooler for the i5, it ships with a stock fan. Since you're not overclocking you don't need anything beyond a stock fan. That said, stock coolers are kinda crap and noisy compared to even a $20 3rd party model.

On the topic of overclocking, since you're getting a Z series board and it looks like the price difference between a 6600 and a 6600k is barely worth mentioning, have you considered going to the K model so you can overclock in the future?

It is a second hand i5 so I don't know if it has a fan until I get it, but it comes with a 2 year warranty from the retailer. The K version is a good 50 squids more expensive...

I am getting the Z170P not the D3 edition. Don't worry about that :p
Also sorry for double posting...

Ok good. I was main concerned because on first search for the Z170P, the D3 version came up more than the other.

As for the CPU, if its second hand you're going to at the very least need new thermal compound for it. I'd recommend looking at a Cryorig M9 for a cooler if you just want something a bit better than stock. The Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo might be easier to find tho, but its much bigger and you get some overlap on the RAM slots which can be a bit of a hassle depending on how tall your ram is. But that only really applies if you fill up all the banks.

When you get your video card, look at the 1060 or 1070 as well. The 1060 beats the hell out of both the 960 and 970 and costs between a 960 and 970. Also confirm the min power requirements for any of the cards your going to look at, a 400w PSU may be too low.

Gosh I keep forgetting to mention things...
I have silicone based thermal paste which is excellent actually. My work uses it on their server's Xeons so I'm more than happy using it.

I haven't got a GPU as of yet and don't plan to get one until later on in the year, so I'm more than confident that a 405W PSU can get me by until the time comes.

You're very helpful!

Ok good, you sound like you're pretty set then. I'd shop around for some coolers that you like just in case the i5 comes in bare. Beyond that it sounds like you're good to go.
