I just moved my PC from my home to college. My system worked prior to moving and now nolonger turns on when the power button is pressed. I hear a sound like a switch is flipped when i hit the power button the fan spin up for about a second then they turn off. I tried unplugging my graphics card and starting it, un plugging all the cables that are connected to my powerstrip and just running my desktop. The LEDs on my powersupply are still on when the powersupply is plugged in, when i plug in my mouse/keyboard their LEDs turn on. Im thinking my motherboard my have shorted out while i was moving into my dorm. Any help would be appreciated.

i just unplugged the four pin power cable and pulled it in very securely. The computer turned on for like 3 seconds and then turned back off

Try removing one of those 4GB sticks of RAM and try again. If it still fails, swap the sticks so you remove the other and put the first one back.

If that doesn't sort it, we have to consider the motherboard may have shaken loose in transit and is shorting. That means removing it from the case and layhing it on some newspaper or cardboard to see if can work properly out of the box.

so i pulled the whole system out of the case and put it on my desk with some paper under the mother board. The computer is running and has been for like 10 minutes now so huge progress. I plugged in my graphics card into my monitor and it is saying that there is no signal.

Modern cards carry a lot of weight and swinging around in the back of a car could damage the fragile connectors in the slot or on the card itself..

I hope it's the card even though it's probably expensive to replace but I reckon you've found the problem. You might be stuck with onboard graphics for a while. Recase it and make sure it works in the box.

when i insert the gpu into the pcie slot the LEDs on the 8 and 6 pin power plugs light up so im thinking that the gpu is broken. I did notice that the heat sink felt disconnected from the PCB. The fans on the heat sink spin up too so im unsure. I'm asking around to see if anyone has a system i could test my gpu in.
