So I needed a new CPU cooler for my old system, and bought a Coolermaster hyper 212 evo.
System specs:
I decided to also upgrade my RAM from 6 gb to 12 gb.
So I bought a triple kit, with 3x4 gb since the I7 supports triple channel memory.
Corsair vengeance, 1600MHz, 9-9-9-24, 1.5V
(http://www.corsair.com/en/vengeance-12gb-triple-channel-ddr3-memory-kit-cmz12gx3m3a1600c9)

In order to install the new cooler I had to remove the motherboard to install the backplate.
After connecting everything again, including new RAM it showed a CMOS checksum error.
Then it started fine and got stuck on the windows logo.

I googled and found a lot of the same problems but none of their solutions fixed it for me.
BIOS recognizes the 12 gb of ram. I manually selected the timings, I reset to default settings and even putting back the old RAM doesn't let me boot past the windows logo.

Every first time I start the PC (after power has been off) it boots into a "found a problem" menu where I can go to a restore point or safe mode etc. Trying to do safe mode boot from the menu is not possible because the sub menu doesn't respond.
When I then restart it stays on the windows logo forever and the keyboard lights flicker and then stay off.

Is this a hardware issue or software issue? I'm completely stuck.
Thanks for any help.

Solution
In the recovery environment I was able to get into advanced options and go to the DOS prompt. I opened notepad to check my hard disks and they seemed fine. So is there a way to find out if it's a BIOS setting that's wrong, a hardware problem or a windows problem?

Edit: I managed to boot in safe mode both with the SSD and an older harddisk with windows 8. After restarting in normal mode the SSD gets stuck on windows logo. The hard disk does boot normally.

Next I enabled "sata port0-3 native mode" and it booted normally on the SSD. No idea if this option actually was the reason or the extra restart solved it.

So it seems to be fixed, for now at least, but I have no idea why..

With just the new DRAM try raising the QPIVTT voltage about + 0.07...if no joy, try loosening the cooler then snug down screw tight, many overtighten the cooler in a corner or side which can throw the CPU out of level and effect the memory channels

Didn't seem to work. I did get a Main bios checksum error and an INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE blue screen between attempts, but after that it went back to being stuck at the windows logo again.
