Do I need to use the SATA data cables I got with my motherboard?

I think I read somewhere not too long ago that you really should use the SATA data cables you got with your motherboard as if you use another set you could short the HDD/Mobo. Is this true?

Uh, no? Your motherboard generally only come with 2x SATA cables. Some higher end may have more but you are expected to buy more SATA cables if you want to use more SATA devices.
