Just built a new pc with a radeon 480x that now stutters or tears every few seconds in-game

Hey everyone. I hope you can help me with this issue I've been having with my new gpu (just got it yesterday.)

After installing the new XFX RX 480 I noticed a screen "tearing" or a lag every few (approx 7 seconds) to my frame rate when playing war hammer total war. It was most noticeable for me on the battle map with all the soldiers marching, and what I would assume the GPU was under load. I noticed as well the sound becomes distorted. This has also happened in other games including overwatch

I was worried this may have been a symptom of conflicting drivers, so I ran display driver uninstaller, and reinstalled my drivers in safe mode. The problem didn't change. I also bought a new psu as I was worried my approx 6 year old 650w had been dying, but there was no change. It doesn't seem like temps are out of the ordinary, and overall things seem ok in that regard. Getting no errors or blue screens or anything. This is the only problem. I should note this problem has only occurred in games like warhammer and overwatch, and has not happened when I'm watching videos or just browsing the intrawebs.

Any ideas for any fixes?. I really hope the gpu I just got is not defective. I'll be happy to provide any additional info. I can also record the tearing if need be. Thank you!

The screen tearing is down to the variability in GPU FPS output to monitor refresh rate. I had the same issue in BF4 and it was a real game breaker. The best thing to do to minimise it is to turn on frame rate pacing in the crimson driver and set it to your monitors refresh rate, e.g 60 FPS for a 60hz monitor. This will have the added benefit of lowering your GPU's utilisation and thus temps.

Others will shout me down on this but there is absolutely no point in running a game beyond the frame rate at which your monitor can refresh.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not super tech literate so I set my drivers to wait for vertical refresh if this is what you meant. Would this also explain the sound tearing? I have a pretty old mobo so I guess I'm worried (maybe wrongfully so) that the gpu is simply too much for it.

Do NOT turn on or force on Vsync either in the Crimson driver or in-game, it causes more problems than it solves. AMD came up with frame pacing and freesync to resolve the issues seen with screen tearing (as have Nvidia with G-Sync) If you do not have a monitor which supports freesync, then all you need to do is as I've described above - turn on frame pacing and set the slider to whatever your monitor refresh rate is. You will notice the occasional line across the middle of your screen but nothing like the tearing you would see otherwise.

Alright, so I tried setting the frame rate target control (I hope this is what you were talking about) to 60 hz. I set settings to ultra in warhammer on a huge battle and got only approx 30-40 fps and the problem still persists. I also tried the same thing at medium settings and the issue persisted getting 60 fps with my 60hz monitor (I know it's crap.)

It feels like my frames are pretty low at ultra settings. Also, perhaps tearing wasn't the right word to describe this problem. It seems every 7 seconds, my frame rate just dips to the point where I can see the frames changing one by one, but then in less than half a second everything is back to normal. I guess this just felt like tearing to me, but my screen isn't literally tearing. As I also mentioned, the sound becomes distorted as well.
