PC shuts down shortly after boot

Hello All!

So I've been having a pretty serious issue with my PC and although I have an idea of the culprit in all this, I'm not really sure on how to proceed and maybe there are things I never thought about so that's why I decided to come and ask this benevolent community for help.

So here's what happens:

I turn on the PC. It boots. Then it turns off and after a second it turns back on. And this cycle keeps repeating itself if I leave it alone.

Now here's some interesting things to note: When I turn off and on the PSU and then boot the PC the booting process will last for around 30 seconds. Then when it turns itself off and back on again the boot process is shorter at around 15-20 seconds and if I leave it be the process shortens to around 11-12 seconds.

I am unable to stay into the BIOS menu (it turns off and on again as I said) and naturally I cannot boot into safe mode either (it doesn't leave me enough time). Also on the first boot I am able to log into windows since the boot is long enough but then it shuts down again. At first I simply thought that my PC needed some cleaning (although it had been only about 2-3 weeks since the last clean) so I completely disassembled it (minus MB, CPU and CPU fan) and cleaned it furthermore.

Then after I reassembled the whole thing I decided to test it before closing back the case (meaning that the cables were not sitting tightly inside) and it seemed alright. I was able to boot fully into windows and it stayed for around 4-5 minutes when i decided to turn if off and call it a day.

Naturally the problem re-occurred as soon as I closed the case and turn it back on.

Now the culprits here would usually be either the PSU or MB. It has nothing to do with either of my hard drives because I disconnected them now and the problem has not gone away. But what I feel is that the problem may also be between the PSU and MB (the cables or their connection). Testing whether my PSU is faulty or not is kinda hard since it has this thing where the fan isn't going to spin unless it is under heavy load.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, sorry for the long post I just wanted to include as much info as I can.

Here are the full specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4770
GPU: Nvidia GTX 670
MB: MSI H97 Gaming 3
PSU: Corsair RM 550 80+ Gold
OS: Windows 10 Pro

Hello friends and thank you both for your incredibly speedy replies.

I have tried your suggestion before and decided to do it again just in case. Everything booted perfectly and I'm into windows and can do whatever I want. It is important to note that as it was the last time everything worked out: the case is wide opened and the PSU is sitting outside with the cables NOT sitting tighly into the case. I have tried again WITH the GPU and it is also working.

Most likely it was just a BIOS glitch. Make sure to update the bios just in case. And NEVER run the computer with PSU not secured, it's very dangerous!

Hey guys,

sorry for the late answer. So I've been trying a few things, I switched some power cables around in my case just so that they are in more "comfortable" positions. So with the PSU sitting outside (Yes I know it can be dangerous don't worry I've taken precautions and it's not a habit of mine to use the PSU this way) the PC was running perfectly with or without the GPU.

So with this new cable managment i decided to close the case and use it as intended. The problem came back. At first I noticed that everytime i closed the case it would kinda semi-unplug one of my HDDs and this was one cause for those shutdowns and restarts. after i corrected that, the problem kept reoccurring still. This happened with and without the GPU being plugged in.

One interesting observation is that the PC remains turned on for much longer with this new cable managment which leads me to believe I either have faulty cables or am not as good as i thought at managing cables.

As for the BIOS; I believe it was updated about 2-3 weeks before this problem occured. If this issue is indeed related to the BIOS wouldn't these problems occur right after I update it? As it stands now there is no newer update (I was able to check)

I did some more cable management and everything seemed to work perfectly at last. The case was closed and everything. Now i move thr pc back to my room and the first issue happens once again. As if I did nothing to fix it.

I'm at a complete loss guys I really dont know what more I could do...
