Internet Lagging Whenever Someone Else Watches Video

Hey there,

I am a networking noob, so I'm not entirely sure how to go about fixing this problem. A little info is that I live in a small apt with one other person and whenever they watch Youtube, even at lower quality settings, I cant watch a video/games spike to high ping. We have extremely good wifi, about 120 Down, 6 Up - just tested - and our apt is small, about 400 sq feet. I have a surfboard 6580, wifi running in b/g/n. The issue even happens on my computer, which is plugged in via ethernet. It seems like it favors her device because she never complains about it, which I know she would. Ive read about QoS, but I'm still looking in to that. Im not really sure what settings to switch on QoS, but I would like it to give priority to the ethernet.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

You can't give priority to the Ethernet AFAIK.

There are software solutions that can adjust bandwidth distribution which is what you want, though I don't know where to look. Someone else may help.

(I'm not sure if the ROUTER needs to control this, but it seems likely so it's possible you may need a better router with this feature)

Your issue is the available bandwidth coming into your MODEM. It is not an issue of wi-fi, or ethernet. When someone watches a video of say 500KBps if you had only 700Kbps you'll have only 200Kbps left.

Your apartment complex may also share their incoming bandwidth from the ISP so the amount you get might vary. You can test here (and I would do so several times throughout the day to see if it changes)-> http://www.speedtest.net/

QoS looks at the type of incoming data and can prioritize it for things such as NETFLIX. It won't guarantee a stable Netflix experience, but it should increase the bandwidth relative to a computer downloading non-priority data.

QoS is simply turned on in the ROUTER (login through web browser as per manual login instructions). Check the manual for more information if needed.

wi-fi more info:
Wi-fi only needs to be fast enough to transfer the data. It is LOCAL only so is not related to the bandwidth you get coming into your apartment.

A Netflix movie might be around 600Kbps which is far less than what you are capable of, so none of your issues relate to wi-fi directly.

other:
*I have problems watching Youtube video with Google Chrome. It usually just hangs there, and nothing I have tried fixes it (including reinstalling, disabling addons, trying different versions... ).

Microsoft Edge (Windows 10) works fine. I think Firefox does as well.

I'm not quite sure I am following, I understand that it is not an issue between Wi-Fi and ethernet, and it is bandwidth; however, we are getting 120 Mbps download which should be more than enough to handle two Youtube videos or a Youtube video and a game. I'm not sure about the lines coming into our apartment, but we pay for our own internet, separate from the other tenants and we have our own network. I believe I have QoS already on, but I dont understand which values I would need to change.

I also get that issue with google chrome where youtube just black screens forever and there is nothing you can do about it, but I just cant get used to Edge... My youtube usually fixes with a restart though.
