Just purchased a pre-owned VTX R9 270 2gb graphics card and when I go to boot a puff of smoke comes from the PSU connector and nothing else happens... No boot, no spinning of fans and no life other than a small puff of smoke floating upwards.

My system is a Gigabyte H81M-S2H 1150, Intel i3-4160, 8gb Ram, xfx 500w psu which is brand new.

Everything works great without the card, it also works great with another PCIE 6850 graphics card i have (thankfully).

Any ideas what the problem could be, could it be fixed?

Thanks in advance.

If you are referring to the 6-pin connection that is smoking, unplug the connector and look at the 6 pins. Then look at the 6-pin header on the card. If there is smoke rising from the connector, there must be a burnt pin or two.

Update... its now not smoking, gave it a good blow to make sure it was clear of any debris and now the fans spin and there is no smoke... However I'm getting error beep which indicates a graphics card problem and the system doesn't boot. I've tried via and hdmi cables and still no joy... any tips?

Try a different gfx card.
Did you see any burnt marks on the pins or socket?
