Hi all,

I recently built a PC with the following specs: Intel i5 6500 (3.2 GHz), Geforce FTX 1070, 16GB Corsair DDR4 2133 RAM, and a B150 Gaming M3 Motherboard.

Long story short, everything worked fine with the build the first day I made it. I installed Windows 10, upgraded it to the most recent version, installed drivers, and started installing and playing games on it. Everything ran beautifully and like I had hoped it would.

Then, when I went to boot up the computer this morning, the Windows logo appeared onscreen and then the screen went dark and I was unable to communicate with the computer. I restarted and checked the BIOS screen. Only half of the BIOS screen had loaded and I was unable to access most of its features (I had no problem with BIOS yesterday). The screen looks like this: http://imgur.com/jSoRcTi

There is no indication in the upper right-hand corner that there is a recognized MB, CPU, and the DDR Voltage is half of what it should be. Does anyone have any idea of what is going on here? Is this a problem with a motherboard, the power supply, CPU? Any help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated.

Solution

Yes, an overheating processor would cause the BIOS to not be displayed correctly on screen and all sorts of weird bugs. The Intel stock cooler is a good one, it just needs to be properly installed. And since you took it out, I suggest you clean both the processor and the cooler base with dehydrated alcohol and reapply thermal paste. Just put a small dab of it at the very center of the...

Are using the stock cooler? If so, have you checked to see if it all 4 mount pins of the cooler are well pinned to the motherboard? The Intel stock cooler is a little bummer to install and if it's not well installed it may cause the processor to overheat causing the pc to not work properly.

Thanks for your response. I am using the stock cooler but, at least from my estimation it is installed correctly. When I took it out, though, I noticed that the TIM is not spread as much as it should be (http://imgur.com/SFRDFdS). But would this cause the BIOS to mess up on start-up? Is there that much heat getting to the processor that soon?

Just put a small dab of it at the very center of the processor and install the cooler, the product will evenly spread by itself as you put the cooler on it.

"... the DDR Voltage is half of what it should be..."

Could be a lot of things, but you do have one symptom which points to power, so...

What power supply are you using? Are all its voltages normal? Is it from a reliable maker? Can it supply enough power, say 850 watts? Can it support the big graphics card load on 12v (tho one source claims this is drawing only 161 watts, I'm skeptical of that)? Are you overclocking or overvolting? Is your CPU cooler feeling very hot? It should be warm, not stone cold and not super hot. The nominal memory voltage for your memory is 1.2V, and you show 1.1216V measured in your first screenshot, so was it lower another time?

My suspicion is toward the power supply, or the motherboard step-down power supply for memory, but as I said, could be many things. If everything measures normally, try some shotgunning. Try a higher wattage different known good power supply. Replace the graphics card with a very low power one. Take out all memory except the first slot. Disconnect any extra hard drives. I'm just suggesting easy things that may reduce power consumption and help you zero in on the problem. Best of luck, and report back when you fix it so we all learn.

So good news, bad news. Good news. I got some TIM and the computer now boots without issue. The fan runs great as do all of my programs.

But with this solution came another problem. After installing the fan again, there are red horizontal lines flickering across the screen. They sometimes turn blue depending on what the background of the computer is set to be. I'm not sure what the cause of this is... Did I accidentally hit the graphics card during fan installation?

Again, thanks so much for your help. Sorry that this issue was replaced with a second one.
