i have a sony 42" tv and while connecting it with my desktop through a hdmi cable .. my desktop doesnt recognize the tv. on the screen resolution>display>only two options are available.
1. display device on VGA
2. generic non pnp monitor.
what should i do?

have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling your graphics (with ddu program to flush completely before reinstall) and audio drivers?
